4 Key Ways a Criminal Record May Affect Your Job Search (consultant posted on February 19th, 2012 )

If you happen to be hunting for a job and have a criminal history there is nothing that is feared more  than a criminal background check.  More and more employers these days are running a pre employment background check.  According to a study conducted by human resource experts the amount of employers that are doing background checks prior to hiring has reason to 92%.
Although it may seem like an enormous challenge it is not impossible for someone that has a background with a criminal record to find a job.  The secret to being able to find a job with a criminal record is learning how your criminal record will have an impact on your job searching so that you can properly strategize.  The following are four ways in which a criminal record will affect a job search.
You should be made aware that you may be excluded from certain professions.  There are many private businesses and government agencies that are vile of required to perform background checks before hiring someone who’ll be doing certain jobs.  These jobs include working directly with children, operating a firearm, working in a financial institution and other civil accusations.
You may have your credibility called into question.  If you’re criminal offense involved dishonesty or dealt with money there are many employers that will automatically assume that you’re not trustworthy.  It is incredibly important to be as honest as possible and to provide excellent professional or character references from people with no criminal histories to prove that you deserve to be trusted.
You simply may be automatically disqualified.  There are simply some companies that will not hire anyone with a criminal background.  Studies have shown that close to 60% of employers would not consider hiring someone that has a criminal past.  The main reason for this thinking is that the company would be held liable should the person commit a crime while working.
It may be difficult in advance in your career if you have a criminal background.  Even if you have stellar references and I able to market yourself well if you have criminal background you may find it hard to advance within the company as you would be considered a risk to the company’s reputation.
The good news is that there are laws in place that are designed to protect job applicants.  A potential employer must obtain written permission from you prior to forming a background check.  In addition to a lot of dating written permission they also need to provide the information of the agency doing the background check and follow other to numerous Federal and state regulations.

Getting Interviews But No Offers? (consultant posted on February 19th, 2012 )

So you have the interview.  You are incredibly excited about being given the chance the interview with the company.  You know it is a good company and the work is right up your alley.  From everything that you’ve heard this sound like an excellent employer.  The job listing that they have posted sound like it is been listed just for you.  From all indications it looks like this should be the right job for you.  You have great qualifications that fit in well with this industry and you have the experience that they’re looking for.  So what could possibly go wrong?
The first problem is you did not dress to fit the company that you’re interviewing with.  Each company has a sort of look that they like employees to follow.  You can figure out what kind of look that a company has by driving past the company at the beginning and ending of the day some time before your interview.  You want addressed in a way that is comfortable but you also want to fit in to the team that you’re hoping to join.
The second problem is that you are not picking up on the signals of the questions that the interviewer requires your focus on.  If you veer off from what the interviewer is showing interest in the interview is likely to take a bad turn.  Your resume is simply a marketing piece that gets you the interview.  The interview itself is your opportunity to make the sale and get the job.  While you may not think of yourself as salesperson you have to be with you are in an interview.  You need to listen to the questions that are asked and be well prepared with clear answers.
The next problem is that there was no drop to begin with.  Some companies have found an excellent way to get help from people in an industry to the having to pay for it.  Pay close attention to the questions that are being asked to you during the interview.  For instance if they ask you what would you do in the situation or if you have this problem what would you do.  Do not give a complete answer when you are being asked questions like this.  In this instance you want to give enough information for them to be interested in you but do not give them enough information to eliminate the need to hire you.
